First day of Autumn: A change in Seasons and Your Business?

Today marks the first day of Fall or Autumn. This change in seasons will bring about cooler temperatures, shorter days, and longer nights. Deciduous tree leaves will change, and eventually shed from their branches as they pave the way for future growth. As you begin to witness these changes in weather and nature, it can serve as a good reminder to review your business and HR policies and procedures for changes that need to be made, and areas that need to be “shed”.

As you review your policies and procedures, take the time to do a comparison against other companies to ensure that you are competitive in the hiring process. Are your handbooks up-to-date? Or do they need to change and be updated with new policies and procedures from when they were first created?

To remain competitive in hiring new employees, maybe it’s time you looked at your benefits package? Are you offering the best package you can? When attracting new employees, a good benefits package can be just as important as salary. When was the last time you looked to make sure that all of your Notice of Employee Rights and other postings, required by law, were up to date? Do you need to change these out for the most current?

Review your written job descriptions, to make sure that they are accurate. While taking the time to do so, why not also review compensation policies. With new job descriptions written out, do you see where an employee/job may not be compensated properly? Does an increase need to be in the works? Or have the job duties decreased, and a decrease in salary needs to be implemented?

The above changes can help your businesses HR functions run smoother in the long run; however, as a small business owner you are probably already strapped for time. One of the best changes small business owners can make is to simply shed those HR administrative functions, the way that a tree sheds its leaves in the fall.
